Celebrating a Decade of the Wise Men Say Podcast

It's our birthday! Join us as we celebrate our tenth anniversary

Just over 10 years ago, Stephen and I met in a pub to discuss the prospect of putting together a podcast. On March 7, 2013, we got together for the first show to preview a trip to bottom of the table QPR under Martin O’Neill. We lost 3-1.

I don’t think we ever thought we’d still be doing it ten years later.

We didn’t know each other before we began this journey. The podcast has presented us with the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and experience some things we never really expected nor intended.

The people who have dedicated their time to Wise Men Say over the last ten years have made it what it is, and I know myself and Stephen are eternally grateful to those contributors.

However, obviously, the show would be absolutely nothing without the listeners.

Roughly 160 people listened to that first show. Now, thousands of you give us the time of day on a weekly basis. Goodness knows why, but it means an awful lot. So thanks for putting up with us.

Over the next few months, we will be announcing some things to coincide with our tenth anniversary – so keep your eyes peeled and your ears open.

As always, thank you very much for listening.

Do You Remember The First Time?

The Wise Men Say Podcast didn’t actually get its name until Episode 5 – before then, it was simply the Salut! Sunderland Podcast, ran in partnership with the now-defunct Sunderland blog of the same name.

The original episodes appeared on Soundcloud and exist now as a snapshot back to when we were all ten years younger and our beloved team were in the Premier League. How much has changed…

Episode 2 saw the lads preview the Norwich City game with a familiar-sounding guest, who went on to join the WMS team…

In ten years of Wise Men Say…

The club have…

  • Had 13 permanent managers
  • Been relegated twice
  • Been promoted once
  • Been taken over twice
  • Been the subject of two Netflix series
  • Had one of our players jailed
  • Spent four seasons in League One
  • Released Danny Graham
  • Signed Jermain Defoe
  • Sold Jermain Defoe
  • Signed Danny Graham
  • Released Danny Graham
  • Signed Jermain Defoe
  • Seen Jermain Defoe retire
  • Been to Wembley four times and won twice

Here’s to another ten years!
