Cans & Megabus – Your indispensable guide to Rotherham v Sunderland

Next stop - the New York Stadium!

Okay, six away games in a month is far, far too much for one incredibly good looking columnist. We’re so very tired here at Cans & Megabus HQ. We don’t know much about Rotherham, except that time we went for a friendly and spent the entire berating Josh Robson because we thought he was Billy Jones.

So yeh, that’s Rotherham. They play at the New York Stadium, that’s funny at least, isn’t it? Is it? Ah, who cares.

How Do I Get There?

For you losers driving, take the A1(M) and M1 before exiting at junction 34 and follow the signs for Rotherham. There’s a car park on the corner of Main Street and the A630 dual carriageway which lets you park up for £2. Otherwise, there’s street parking and places available in the town centre which are only a short walk to the ground.

Sat nav losers need to punch in S60 1DF.

Train shaggers will arrive at Rotherham Central station which is accessible from either Sheffield or if you get the rattler from Leeds. The ground is about a 10-minute walk from here.

What’s the Ground Like?

Really nice actually. Despite its dumb name (actually named after the area in which it sits), the New York Stadium is a pretty smart affair. It has a funky roof, lovely steep stands so even if you’re Chris Weatherspoon height you won’t have any problem seeing all the action.

Sunderland fans are housed in the Mears Stand behind the goal. The last time we occupied this terrace it was enthusiastically to cheer the arrival of David Moyes. Halcyon days.

Yer thirsty?

I’ll level with you here, if this was Cans & Megabus embarking on this trip and not spending their time watching some Austrian jobbers instead, we’d spend pretty much all of our drinking time in the Sheffield Tap at Sheffield station.

Despite the losers in Rotherham saying no away fans are welcome in any of the pubs in their loser town, you could always chance yer arm in one of the following…

The Bridge Inn on Greasbrough Road, opposite the station, is very much ‘just a pub’ but an enjoyable one at that. Venture a little further into the town and you’ll find The Mailcoach on Wellgate which is, again, a pleasant watering hole. Alternatively, you can try the New York Tavern on Westgate which also looks fine.
