Cans & Megabus – Your indispensable guide to Reading (A)

Tom Walsh is back with a must-read guide to a stupid midweek away trip to a terrible ground.

Oh mate, Reading away on a Wednesday night? Oh mate. Could there be anything more soul-crushing than travelling all day to one of the worst places in the Football League? We at Cans & Megabus will try our very best to help you through this terrible life decision but we can only do so much.

You brought this on yourself.

How Do I Get There?

If you’re driving to the Select Car Leasing Stadium you can… wait that’s what it’s called now? Hilarious. Anyway, take the A1(M), M1 and M40 to junction 9 and then the A34 and M4 towards Reading. Follow the signs for the stadium before exiting at junction 11. There’s parking at the ground for £10 (lol) or there’s a couple of places around the ludicrous retail park.

Sat nav losers: RG2 0FL

For those of you on the train, Reading railway station is a lovely three miles away from the ground. You can either get the ‘Football Special’ bus from the station or just get a taxi or something, I don’t know.

What’s the Ground Like?

It’s a stadium in the middle of absolute nowhere, surrounded by absolutely nothing, Lol.

Yer thirsty?

Obviously there are no pubs around the ground or anywhere near it but Reading does put on a fanzone which will no doubt sell awful beer in a plastic glass for a fiver. If you have time in the town centre then swing by Zerodegrees Microbrewery on Bridge Street or the charming Alehouse on Broad Street.

The Allied Arms and The Boundary, both on St Mary’s Butts, are also a decent option and within a short walk from the train station.

What’s going on in Reading?

On a Wednesday night? Not much, mate.
