The Wise Men Say Podcast is delighted to announce it has been nominated for a prestigious national award.
The Football Supporters’ Association this week announced the shortlists for the 2021 FSA Awards, in association with BeGambleAware. 84 candidates will contest 14 categories, recognising everything from the best players of 2021 to the best podcasts and fanzines.
Wise Men Say has been nominated in the Club Podcast of the Year category, which is decided by a panel of judges ahead of the awards ceremony later this month in London.
Other awards up for grabs are Men’s Player of the Year, Women’s Player of the Year, Pundit of the Year, Fans for Diversity and Commentator of the Year.
The ceremony will also be recognising the work Supporter Liaison Officers (SLOs) do for fans across the country which often goes unnoticed. The SLO of the Year award highlights the best practice in supporter liaison in the Premier League and English Football League.
The other categories that fans will be able to have their say on include the best bloggers and football writers. In all, ten categories are open to a public vote, while four categories (Club Podcast, Fans for Diversity, Fanzine, and the Supporter Liaison Officer of the year awards) will be decided by an FSA panel.
It is the first recognition for the fan-led podcast which has been covering Sunderland AFC since March 2013. Started by presenters Stephen Goldsmith and Gareth Barker, the podcast has grown from a once-weekly show to three shows a week, with feature-length episodes launched during the COVID-19 lockdown. The team also publish features and opinions on wisemensay.co.uk.

Gareth Barker, co-founder of Wise Men Say, said: “We are flattered and delighted to be nominated for such a prestigious award.
“The podcast is a labour of love that has afforded us the opportunity to meet some great people, make new friends and have a laugh over the last eight years in spite of the actual football. Thanks so much to those who nominated us.”
Kevin Miles, chief executive of the FSA said: “The FSA Awards in partnership with GambleAware are the largest supporter-led awards in the UK and a highlight of the footballing calendar.
“Fans are a huge part of the game at all levels, and the FSA Awards gives fans the chance to have their say on the very best in all aspects of the game, both on and off the pitch.”
Voting is open until midnight on 16th November, with the awards being presented at the FSA Awards ceremony being held at The Londoner Hotel in Leicester Square on Monday 29th November, presented by Victoria Derbyshire.
