Durham Times Column: It’s a must-win game for under-fire Poyet

Today’s piece comes from Gareth Barker.

I’VE always been one to insist that a must win game doesn’t exist, unless you need a victory on the final day of the season to achieve something. However, this weekend bucks that trend; it’s a must win game for Gus Poyet.

His comments after the dismal draw with Fulham didn’t go down too well with supporters. On top of that, he’s trying to win games with a new setup that appears unconventional to those on Wearside. If all things don’t go to plan on Saturday against Burnley, I feel the tide will turn and he’ll be fighting a losing battle with many Sunderland fans.

Personally, I don’t think the things he said were particularly irksome. I think there is an element of truth in the suggestion that some Sunderland fans want to see us play a certain way, a way that harks back to the relatively successful days under Peter Reid.
